The vision of Sir Laufnal
By James Russel Lowell
Barse and Hopkins, NY
The Vision of Sir Launfal is a long, 1848 narrative poem and verse parable by American writer and abolitionist James Russell Lowell.
Publisher: Barse & Hopkins was a New York-based book publisher (active in the early 20th century, notably around the 1910s) that specialized in popular classic poetry, gift editions, and affordable reprint series (such as the Essex Series).
Plot: Sir Launfal is a medieval knight who dreams of setting out in glittering armor to search far and wide for the Holy Grail. Along his journey, he scorns a poor, suffering leper. Years later, returning aged and broken, he shares his meager crust of bread and water with that same leper. The leper is revealed to be Jesus, teaching Launfal that the true Holy Grail is found not in distant adventures or material wealth, but in humble, everyday charity and compassion at home.
